Holy Year Jubilee 2025

Pope Francis has declared 2025 as a Holy Year in the universal Church, and that 2024 should be a year of preparation for this great Jubilee.

The idea of Jubilee has its roots in the Old Testament, with a celebration of a year of forgiveness and reconciliation. The Sabbath was the seventh day, a day of rest, and the Jubilee year was the year following seven times seven years, and so the Jubilee took place every 50th year. In the tradition of the Catholic Church, we now celebrate the Jubilee every 25 years. The Holy Year of 2025 will begin at the Christmas Vigil 2024, when the Holy Father will open the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

There will be four Holy Doors opened in Rome in the four major basilicas – the basilicas of St Peter, St Paul Outside the Walls, St Mary Major and St John Lateran. Pilgrims to Rome will be encouraged to pass through the Holy Doors, which represent Christ, the gateway. Passing through the doors will take us into the church, a place of peace and reconciliation.

Pope Francis says of the Jubilee, “We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us, and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire; that is why I have chosen as the motto of the Jubilee, Pilgrims of Hope. This will indeed be the case if we are capable of recovering a sense of universal fraternity and refuse to turn a blind eye to the tragedy of rampant poverty that prevents millions of men, women, young people and children from living in a manner worthy of our human dignity. Here I think in particular of the many refugees forced to abandon their native lands. May the voices of the poor be heard throughout this time of preparation for the Jubilee, which is meant to restore access to the fruits of the earth to everyone. As the Bible teaches, “The sabbath of the land shall provide food for you, for yourself and for your male and female slaves and for your hired servant and the sojourner who lives with you; for your cattle also, and for the beasts that are in your land, all its yield shall be for food” ( Lev 25:6-7).”

Let us take this opportunity to renew both ourselves and the Church by taking part in the many events which are due to take place, both here in Scotland and in Rome.

On Thursday we completed the penultimate stage of our Scottish Camino, from Kennoway to Ceres. We thank St Giles' church for their hospitality at the start, before we made our way from Kennoway up to Clatto Hill and past the reservoir to the lovely village of Ceres. The walk today was very tranquil, far from traffic, and we were blessed again with perfect walking weather. We are looking forward to our final leg this Thursday, when we will reach our destination of St Andrews.

This week we completed the 8th stage of our pilgrimage from Motherwell to St Andrews, from Leslie to Kennoway, and experienced some light rain for the first time! Despite the occasional shower, we enjoyed the walk. We have been blessed on our pilgrimage with some wonderful hospitality, notably this week from the Church of Scotland in Markinch, who supplied us with lunch and a guided tour of their historic church, which is well worth a visit. We would also like to thank Jane from St Mary's in Leslie and Fr Paul of St Giles' in Kennoway for allowing us to use their facilities at the start and end of our walk.

Bishop Joseph Toal of Motherwell led us on the National Pilgrimage to Iona at the weekend, and we were blessed with wonderful weather. 50 pilgrims from throughout Scotland came together and enjoyed two days in Oban and Iona.
On Saturday we had a day of celebration, as two of our number, Jim and Anne Campbell were celebrating their golden wedding, and as they had honeymooned in Oban, it was an appropriate setting for the occasion. We had Mass in Oban Cathedral, and Bishop Toal gave Jim and Anne a blessing to mark their anniversary.
We travelled through Mull to Iona on Sunday, and had Mass in St Michael's chapel, celebrated by Bishop Toal, and the pilgrims enjoyed exploring St Columba's island in the sunshine.

Our walk from Linlithgow to South Queensferry this week coincided with the hottest day of the year so far, but we were all prepared for the heat. We started with Mass in St Michael's, Linlithgow and proceeded along the canal footpath and on to the historic hamlet of Abercorn, the site of an important 7th century monastery. The path then took us through the magnificent Hopetoun estate and along the Firth of Forth to South Queensferry.
We would like to thank Canon Paul Kelly and the parishioners of St Michael's for their hospitality.
Our next stage is on Thursday, 8th May from South Queensferry to Dunfermline. If you would like to join us, please called Jim McKelvie on 07957 847290 or email j.mckelvie@holyyear2025.org

We had another good day on the pilgrimage trail to St Andrews yesterday. This stage took us from Avonbridge along the banks of the River Avon and the Union Canal to Linlithgow, the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. Conditions underfoot were quite challenging in some places, and we had to negotiate some serious stairs along the way, but we all reached our destination safe and sound. We were blessed with good weather and good company, which made the day enjoyable.
